Melatonin is the best natural sleep aid
Melatonin is a hormone produced naturally in the pineal gland at the base of the brain.
It is important in regulating sleep, and may play a role in maintaining circadian rhythm, the body's natural time clock.
Natural melatonin production decreases with age, and the decrease is associated with some sleep disorders, particularly in the elderly.
The use of melatonin supplements became popular in the mid-1990s as a way of treating insomnia.
Valerian Root is another great natural sleep aid
Valerian is a traditional herbal sleep remedy that has been studied with a variety of methodologic designs using multiple dosages and preparations. Research has focused on subjective evaluations of sleep patterns, particularly sleep latency, and study populations have primarily consisted of self-described poor sleepers. Valerian improves subjective experiences of sleep when taken nightly over one- to two-week periods, and it appears to be a safe sedative/hypnotic choice in patients with mild to moderate insomnia. The evidence for single-dose effect is contradictory. Valerian is also used in patients with mild anxiety, but the data supporting this indication are limited. Although the adverse effect profile and tolerability of this herb are excellent, long-term safety studies are lacking. (Am Fam Physician 2003;67:1755-8. Oh and Xanax is used for panic disorders and agoraphobia... its addictive and I wouldn't recommend looking into it for sleep disorders

Xanax would be no good for sleep. If anything you catch a buzz before your body would pass out. Not to mention a side effect is memory loss with xanax. I'd go with melatonin myself. Works fine for me.

Whenever I have sleeping problems I have used melatonin for a week for so just to get back to normal. This stuff works great. I don't know why more people don't use it.

Has anyone ever used L-tryptophan as a sleep aid. I've never used it, but I am curious.

Melatonin is good. Sometimes I just use benadryl to help hit the rack.

tryptophan is a chemical that aids you in falling asleep. ever had a turkey sandwich or a glass of milk before bed?? you fall asleep right away?? or after a big thanksgiving meal, thats because those foods are full of tryptophan
