Out of popular request from people via PMs I just asked Redi if he was going to make a cialis alternative. I figure he could call it PaperHard... :D I'll let you know what our feline friend says.

Well, I studied it in college as basically the psychological/phylisophical stance of engineering, it's latin. Long story short there was an extremely smart man, Dr. William Ockham, or Occam, no one really knows which one is the correct spelling. He was from the 14th century and as simple as it sounds he came up with a theory that they call Occam's Razor. The theory was that if there are two or more possible solutions to a problem, the simplest and shortest solution has the probability of being correct. It has been translated from that which was the original intent to all kinds of anti-religious theories such as it is hard to prove there is a god, so the simplest solution is to not believe in one, etc. But again that was not his original intent. if you are interested, read about it sometime as there are many books about his thought processes that are very intriguing.

Occam's Razor: Pluralitas non est ponenda sine neccesitate

I'm sure Kaiser will correct me but I think it's latin for "everything being equal, the simplest solution will be the best". My brother explained it to me - he's a philosophy major (he got the brains, I got the strength :D )

Very interesting Kais! Philosophy was my fav. in college...It was one of the few classes I paid attention to other than math...One of the phylosophy classes was prob. one of the toughest I took and I ended up with the highest grade in the class lol...Talk about being compelled to read and reread and reread...

Cool - I aint gonna tell my bro tho it'll jus go to his head. As for Cialis the paper would be a cool method. I always preferred levitra myself - seems to work faster and better. Like blue steel - a goddam cat couldn't scratch it! :D :D

okay... Pluralitas non est ponenda sine neccesitate is Latin and translates "entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily''. This was proposed by William of Ockham. Not sure when.

The Razor is that in any given scenerio, with all things being equal, the simplest explanation would tend to be the most likely. Or you could apply The Razor in a way that says that with multiple hypothesis, test the most obvious first.

Consider that with some things, this is not always true. I'll give an example that WE ALL can understand. Let's say you find a note on your kitchen floor that says

Hey! Call me sometime beautiful!
I want to see you.
Jim
555-5555

There are an infinite number of possible reasons that that particular note was on your floor, stating what it said. Ockham's Razor would suggest that your girlfriend or wife likely held on to a note from some guy named "Jim". Not good... BUT!

What if "Jim" slipped the note in her jacket pocket and when she found it, she threw it away but missed the trash can?

What if she was late and slammed into another girl and the contents of their purses got mixed up?

You would test the most likely hypothesis first by yelling at the top of your lungs when she walks in...
"YOU WHORE!!!"

[edit]Next, "Jim" is found with his testicles removed. Now forensics has to apply the same Razor to his corpse.
