Check out your local army navy store. Fatiques, tank top and a pair of 6 inch Magnums or Hi-Techs is what I wear. ;)

Yeah man, I used to use Doc's also. Nice thing about fatigues is that you can beat the shit out of them and they always spring back. Great leg room. My problem is that I like to wear boots like Magnums for support especially on wheel day, so wearing Nike sweatpants kinda looks funky with boots. Fatigues will last 2 or 3 years easily for 25 or 30 bucks new. Good pockets for your music player and lifting straps also. Oh, and there are warm and cold weather versions also.

Tattered I think I work out hard enough considering I am 52 and still putting the young pumpkin heads to shame. I like the other bros on here can work out in anything. I just need pants tanks and boots. Now on the other hand my honey likes to look good when she works out becuase she has the stuff to flaunt. She asked where she could buy some new things so I ask Alin. I think that is what this site is all about, isn't it. Respectfully I remain independent.

No shit guys, years ago I competed with a guy named Chuck Braxton who had won more championships than I can remember, came out on stage one year in OK to squat and was bare footed. They stopped him and told him he could not do that. He proceeded to squat 900 pounds and was disqualified on his first lift for not using correct equipment. On his next lift he put on his shoes and cranked out 1000 pounds and laughed all the way to the bank. He was 6'7" and around 340 at that time. Got to admire guys who will just push the limits of sanity.

And that is the shit that amazes me sometimes. It's actually safer to squat that heavy weight without shoes in my opinion. When I would try squating 700+, it felt like my ankles were going to snap because even with Otomix, there was a lack of ankle support because the sole allows for lateral play.

I did 4 in the Corps so I cant imagine how anybody can wear fatigues when working out. They are not comfortable and don't breathe and you got to wear a belt and buckle so i can't imagine that at the bottom of a squat or deadlift. They might look cool (or you might think they do) but if your worried about that, where are your priorities?
Comfortable clothes are essential for workouts, and if your gonna squat, make sure you wear boxer-briefs that stretch because you can blow alot of pairs out at the bottom of your squat.
As for Doc Martins or boots for squatting, this is completely wrong. ANY powerlifter will tell you that boots are too elevated off the floor and the cushioning has to much give. This is why Arnold squatted in bare feet. Wrestling shoes or lifting shoes are best.

it's just whatever makes you comfortable. i just wear a t shirt and shorts and my inzer powerlifting boots. occasionally i'll break out the massively freakish traps with a tank top but other than that i just keep it simple. i don't see how you guys can wear pants on leg day though. if i did that they'd freakin rip to shreds at the bottom of my squats.

I dont understand where he gets uncomfortable. They're really comfortable for me. I also do not know what he is talking about with needing to wear a belt. All of my fatigues have either draw string or adjustable straps on the sides. Let alone they wear like iron, they have pockets down on the quads for your lifting straps, mp3 player and accessories. That and they have draw string leg cuffs that keep them from getting hung up on machines. Sounds to me like someone has just gotten tired of wearing fatigues because he was forced to wear them for 5 years. As far as the shoes he is talking about, I believe most of us here were already in agreement that barefoot or really close to the ground is the best way to go for heavy squats. I wear boots because I have broken my ankles a few times and they tend to give a little to much flex. I don't go heavy anymore since I blew out L3 & L4 so no need to go barefoot. It amazes me that someone can actually know what is and is not comfortable on me. I guess I just have to agree to disagree with this guy, no big deal...

I almost pissed myself laughing when I read that!! Seriously though, whatever makes you comfortable. But I guarantee if you were in the service and you had to wear those camos everyday (they are mostly polyester) you would never put them on again. We used to have to do these things called "boots and utes runs" which were 3-5 mile runs in camo utilities and boots. The polyester left a rash on everybody's skin and boots arent the best for running. The fatigues do not breathe like cotton either. If the fatigues are service issued, they do not have a drawstring, they have belt loops and a button. So unless you buy them too small, you would need a belt buckle.
Maybe I am crazy, but polyester is not comfortable. Fatigues are polyester. Cotton is comfortable. I am guessing that if you took a poll, cotton would come out on top as the more comfortable material.
If you broke your ankle before, it obviously makes sense to wear boots. I just have never seen anybody at any meets wear boots when they squat or ever in training. But if its your thing, do it. BUT FOR ME it reduces my squat. So that is why I am against it.

Buying fatigues at an army navy store doesn't necessarily render them genuine. Nor does it render them the sanction of armed forces you were in. Example: They may be real, but from the Army instead of the Marines. We all know they make stuff just a little different. I have not been in the armed forces, so I do not know. These are not 100% polyester, they are 55% cotton, 45%poly and the brand name is Rothco Ultra Force B.D.U. And yes they have adjustable sides.
I think you might have misread my posts for the second time in a row about the boot thing. First off, I had a little over 2000lb total 3 combination powerlift at a little over 6ft tall weighing in at 242. In other words, I do know what I am talking about when it comes to lifting for power, but now I am 35 trying to even things out aesthetically before it is too late under the direction of probably one of the best trainers on the planet for it, Phil Hernon. As I just said, I just recently started lifting for aesthetic reasons after a long break because of injuries on L3 & L4 combined with a chopper accident. Anyway, if you read back, YES, I SAID BOOTS ARE NOT AS GOOD AS BARE FOOT. The closer you are to feeling the ground once your are over 600lb squat the better. BUT, now I do not want to risk my L3 & L4 again so I don't go less than 8 reps which is usually 500+ at this point. As a side note, there are people here that know what I have done in the past as far as weight like OuchThatHurts (mod on professionalmuscle.com), Static and a couple of others if you are not sure of my credentials.
As a side note to all: I am not putting down any of the US armed forces and never would. I outright thank this guy and all others that have put their time in to protect the country I love.

i gotta agree with kaiser that anything with a flat sole or barefoot is best for power on your squats. the squat shoes i wear are flat soled and are lace up boots with velcro straps. these make me feel like my entire leg is supported and they give great ankle support. i do like the fatigues idea for like upper body cause havin the pockets and shit for my ipod and straps sounds awesome so im gonna get a pair and try em out

Fatigues rock brother. The pockets are definately awesome, and they are cheap as hell for how long they last. Keep us updated with your findings IF. Talk to you soon.
Also, if you get a pair like he mentioned (that I have never seen before) that do not have adjustable side straps, Army Navy stores usually have pretty cool lightweight nylon belts that just have velcro for an enclosure instead of a bucket that will cut you. You can pick up one of those for about $10 total and have no major belt buckle hanging over.
BTW, Magnums are awesome too. You can get them at zappos.com pretty cheap. I, like I stated get 6 inch ones, and they are extremely durable.
These are the ones I always wear:

Kaiser,
Yes I think I already know who you are. By your posts I think you post on T-nation, Am I right?
If you read my original post I said that "I" could never imagine wearing them because I was forced to everyday for 4 years, so they are not comfortable to me. But to each his own. For me I have to wear pretty tight briefs that wouldn't be comfortable to most people but I can't stand the feeling of my balls flopping around with under a pair of cotton shorts. Whatever works. I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers.
I do like the strap power boots and also like wrestling shoes. I still like to use some form of a shoe even when deadlifting. I think this is mostly mental.
The camo thing makes me laugh because my wife recently bought an H-3 . After driving a Humvee in the field for 4 years, I said "Why in the hell would you want one of those?" She gave me the same kind of response you did. Listing all its benefits. And the thing is pink so I can't even take it out for a spin to get all nostalgic and teary-eyed.

every pair of fatigues I have been issued have side pull tabs, but still, i would never wear them, they don't stretch.
as for shoes, I have tried all kinds and find that a pair of Jump boots (leather with canvas upper) tied real tight worked the best.
Bare foot, no way, my arches would never forgive me.

I think it should be mandatory that all women only wear thongs not the shoes when squatting and they must always have a man spotting them just in case an emergency happens. It would them be the responsibility of the gym owner to provide oxygen masks and oxygen bottles for the spotters. Spotters must provide water, towels, protection, and wine to qualify as a spotter.
