View Full Version : Cardio on cycle dangerous?
The BB Monad

The one personal trainer at my gym told me to be careful whilst on cycling because too much cardio can have a muscle building effect on the heart resulting in heart enlargement and therefore future hearts problems!
Any truth in this? I usually end my workouts with 15 min cardio if I still have the energy and at least once a week hit the gym just for cardio for about 40-60min. It helps keep the fat off.
Any opinions or suggestions?
I've heard this too, but I've always avoided cardio as much as possible... but 15 minutes of cardio isn't a lot man I wouldn't be worried.
I just read a thread a few min ago of some guy on sus and dec doing 5k runs lol

i read that weight training alone can have the same effect on heart, especially when you train legs

i've been wondering about this aswell. i love cardio, and i have to get a couple of interval runs per week. i also remember reading somewhere on this board about test e/c cycle + cardio would give a good lean mass cycle, so my future cycle plans incorporate cardio.. also by doing squats your HR is at about 80-90% of max when you do heavy sets, atleast mine is anyway..

my HR goes up while squatting too, higher than when doing cardio:D

It depends how many cycles you have run,it gets to a point where your heart is stronger than it would when it is natural, then it goes past that and becomes dangerous as it is too big

hehe. maybe you should try to run abit faster:D
but seriously, heavy squats are insane in terms of HR..

High blood pressure is like putting more weight on the barbell of the heart, whereas an increased heart rate with good blood pressure is like doing light weight with quick high reps, on the other hand doing exercises that increases heart rate while having high blood pressure is like doing a marathon heavy day on the juice.
Obese people with high blood pressure develop cardiac hypertrophy(big heart) without involving themselves with exercises or taking steroids.

ive heard of all this but never really heard anyone that concerned about it so i thought it was a minimal difference...interesting

Well if this were true then arnolds heart would be big enough for all of us to use!!! im sure it makes it stronger and a little bigger but not like blow out of your chest big!!!
I think cardio on cycle is a good thing...I was told my doctor to keep the cardio up to keep my lipid profile in check.

Juice or no juice bodybuilders and weightlifters run the risk of some type of a valve problem. I read its somewhat common but I don't think it's very dangerous. And of course it'll be blamed on the juice no matter what!

:Dmaybe you should have a leg work out with me:D
i dont run, i do anaerobic work:D however, started to do some interval runs to get fitter:D

yeah intervals are my cardio! 4x4 at about 80-90% of max HR! hate hate hate while it goes on, and great joy afterwards!! you will notice the difference in fitness shortly! and i assume adding test will not hurt either:D
regarding squats, i've gone for Arnolds advice on building bigger legs and started to wear a shorts (NO NOT THE PINK KIND WITH MY ASS CHEEKS HANGING OUT as somebody mentioned in another thread) so that every time i am in the gym i am reminded that i have to pay max attention and intensity on my squat workouts:D

Yeah but they were saying it would grow!!! having a vale changed is different than an enlarged heart!!!

i can't find the study but i just saw it a few weeks ago and remember it well. testosterone(can't remember doses) over 20 weeks showed no significant increase in heart size but hgh+test showed noticeable growth. the heart size normalized after going off hgh for 200 days.

future heart problems.... sounds kind of vague.
yes hypertrophy does happen in athletes but it is the bodies way of being more efficient... bigger heart pumps more blood per stroke volume.
if you dont have any pre-existing medical conditions and your diet is spot on... no worries mate!!!

Remember - Arnold did have open heart surgery...
that was not related to steroid use or being a body builder... he suffered from a hereditary condition.

This has sparked my interest. I'm a huge fan of skipping rope. While off season I don't do any cardio. But on season, I gradually increase intensity on skipping rope till I'm at the point where I'm 5 days a week at 40 min sessions high intensity with 2.5kg weights strapped to my ankles. So by September I hope to maintain some cardio with my cycle to blast what fat I have left.

sorry guys i looked all over for this and can't find it.:( i remember in the conclusion to the study they theorized that test doesn't affect cardiac and smooth muscle like it does skeletal muscle but hgh makes EVERYTHING grow.

When you are working out hard that is a form of cardio anyway. I need to do cardio while on cycle to control blood pressure.

I think that trainer guy is wrong...I used to do 2 or three 45 minute sessions a day, plus my weight training when I got ready for a show. Even off season I did 30 mins a day...with no side effects (except for the extreme chest pain that ran down my arm and made my face go numb)
my HR goes up while squatting too, higher than when doing cardio:D
Mine too. I'm gasping for breath at the end of my work sets and my HR is maxed out. Legs a brutal.

I believe what happens is the heart becomes stronger and has to work less to pump the blood through your system. One beat from a strong heart is as good as two beats from a regular heart. As a result, instead of you heart beating like bump, bumpbump it ends up beting like bump.........bump..........bump.. Because of the pause in your heart beat some people with irregualr strength hearts end up having too long of a pause inbetween beats, and the result is a heart attack. I'm not 100% on this, but this is what i've heard...

I honestly thought everyone knew the answer to this.
All physical activity causes the heart walls to get thicker, period (it is called "ventricular hypertrophy"). a thick heart chamber wall that showed up in a physically fit person's ECG is not essentially an alarm, but in a couch potato it could mean bad business.
Of course, Anaerobic activity causes the walls to become much more thicker than aerobic would. Aerobic activity trains the heart to pump a larger amount of blood through an increase in the size of the ventricles (yes in this case the cavities get larger too.
Whereas Anaerobic activity causes it to act more like a hydraulic pump as push the blood with more force, it is in this case that a thicker wall is vital, or you could blow a hole in the left ventrical.
That being said, strict anaerobic activity and no aerobic activity will eventually make the left ventricle smaller internally which can become a bad thing. this is why everyone should incorporate cardio in their workouts to keep a balance between wall thickness and chamber space.
This should answer everyone's question.
As for that personal trainer....he is an idiot, and you can tell him I said that
