Well, ive had calluses for years ever since i started going gym, and they aint been that much of a problem as my weights increased gradually, but after I did my first cycle in the summer, my weights went up, and my calluses got really bad. Every time I shrug, deadlift or do any heavy weighted exercise my hands just KILL! Im literally tearing my hands apart. Ive overcome the problem with deadlift and shrugs with using straps, and i bought some weightlifting gloves but they just dont seem to work. I know this sounds sick LOL, but ive started to shave the calluses off my hand with a razor, so it takes off the tough layers of skin. Any1 know any other methods to help these agonising b*****ds on my hands?

Man, I have the same problem but its with my feet because of the dress shoes i have to wear while im working... I've tried all kinds of things but the best solution i found was to soak my feet in hot salt water and use a scrubbing stone and this razor that looks like a cheese grater (1x every 2 weeks)...It gets all the dead layers of skin off and keeps my feet soft and comfortable. I have a friend who plays profootball for the Arizona Cardinals and he gets a manicure every two weeks because he has the same problems with his hands...The problem is that once callouses start forming, unless you stop putting pressure on that particular area, they are going to keep coming back... The straps and gloves will minimize the rate at which they form but unfortunately you will most likely continue to have that problem...

I got the same issue. Been in construction for years and have always had heavy callouses. (sp?)

I wound up trimming mine after having problems at the gym.

I shave mine. It doesnt really ever get better, but shaving them keeps it from getting much worse. Plus I like the looks of horror I get from gym bunnies after a good set of deads when my hands and shins are bleeding.

Ever tried rowing? I did crew for a few years. First year, my hands were bloody at the end of some regattas. I'd rub my bloody hands on my face and run around scaring little children.

Calluses I formed from that experience are impenetrable though. Make sure you use real-deal wooden oars. Haha.

You might also try just filing down the calluses. I wouldn't advise cutting em off entirely (good way to get an infection), but that should help some.

I find that calluses make holding onto heavier weights all that much better, it is almost like locking your palms into position once you wrap your hands around the bar or like one member says " MAN UP"

sometimes i use a pumice stone and file them down. they're good for grip, but if you're planning on deadlifting really heavy, sometimes its good to smooth em out, because those bastards can hurt when you rip one completely off. if you do rip one off, best thing to do is stuff it full of chalk and keep goin :D

A real effective and cheap method would be to use sponges. Seriously, we use the kind you would wash your car with. Get a thick set of sponges, cut them to size. You'll find that they contour to your hands comfortably and provide some adequate grip. And if you're concerned whether or not you look stupid, remember you're the one that looks good lifting heavy weights and you'll find people soon copying you.:):):)

bump this......and if you keep shaving them you're just giving them a nice soft spot to come back--just leave them alone and you'll adjust and your skin will get used to it and it eventually won't be such a problem

i move furniture for a living,16 years of doing this and I have them all the time and I never think about them when a lift, you will adapt to all that shit just ignore them and keep doing what you do.
Your body will make adjustments to whatever you do but in the mean time you just grin and bare until that happens

I wouldn't necessarily say "MUST", as your grip/forearm strength won't get much stronger using training aids all of the time. I would limit them to the last set or two of each exercise, that way you are getting the best of both worlds, just my opinion though.
