while a chemical is still attached to its ester, is it working? im so confused, and nothing i found on esters makes it any easier.

I am not sure about this, but I believe an ester must release the compound before it will take effect. Perhaps someone else could chime in.
I prefer shorter esters, less ester, more compound.

an ester controls the duration of the chemical effect.. the longer the ester the longer it will take to effect you and the longer it will stay in your system. The ester determines the distribution of the chemical in your system.

Esterfied Steroids are dormant. When the steroid passes through the liver, the ester is stripped, forming the active steroid and a carboxylic acid. The size of the ester will regulate how quickly it leaks into the bloodstream.
Example: Testosterone Propionate reacts with enzymes in your liver to form testosterone and propionic acid.
